Thirty-one Palm Beach Gardens Pre-Med Sophomores recently took a Field Trip to the University of Florida (UF).  Because their teacher completed a Summer Science Institute through the Center for Precollegiate Education and Training at UF, she had the opportunity to bring a group of students for a day filled with science education about UF’s health science programs.

Students completed a lab about pathogens at the Cancer/Genetics Research Complex, took a tour of the Health Science Center, learned about the various aspects of different specialties, degree options and classes offered, and were introduced to six Palm Beach Gardens High School Pre Med Alumni for a Question and Answer panel session.

Alumni pictured Left to Right, seated are:  Lidia Losada (’09), Kayla Morneault (’09), Connie Wagner (’08), Brandon Duncanson (’09), Andre Clark (’09), and Patricia Diskant (’09). Connie is in her first year of Physician Assistant School at UF and Patricia is in her first year of Veterinary School at UF (one of the youngest in her class!) and the others graduated with their Bachelor’s degrees and are currently preparing their Medical School applications.

The current PBGHS students asked the grads a variety of questions– mostly about the transition from high school to college and what it takes to be successful.  Each graduate shared their personal stories of struggle and triumph and what their path to success entailed.  “The sophomores were eager to meet and talk to the PBGHS alumni and the UF grads were just as thrilled to be a part of encouraging and enlightening these students on what it takes to achieve your goals,” said Kendra Huff, Pre Medicine Magnet Instructor.  “You can want it, but you also have to work hard to achieve it, was the underlying theme of the day.”
